"Swallow's Nest" - castle in Yalta

The history of the castle "Swallow's Nest" starts in 1877-1878, when a small wooden structure was erected on the cliff. The image of this beautiful landscape you can see on the picture by the great Russian artist Aivazovsky. Then a wooden castle was replaced by several owners, until his mistress did not become a merchant woman Rakhmanina from Moscow, which completely revolutionized it, and called the "Swallow's Nest."
Over the years, a major German oil magnate Baron von Stengel bought this patch of land over a cliff. He was often in the Crimea for business, where he liked to relax. He ordered the architect, Sherwood, to redesign “Swallow's nest”, to be reminiscent of the medieval castles of his homeland.
For example, in 1912, it was built close to a modern Gothic castle. Its height was 12 m, and length was only 20. At the beginning of WW I Von Stengel sold the building to the merchant Shelaputin where he decided to put a restaurant, which incidentally, did not bring much revenue to the new owner.
In 1927, in Crimea near Yalta there was very strong earthquake. It was a 9 on the Rictor scale and split the rock under castle "Swallow's Nest" almost in half. After the reconstruction and strengthening of the rock structure of the Swallow's Nest it was reopened to the public. For a long time, it was a popular restaurant, now it is a museum.
